The week's question
In December 2024, in the thread "Re: BRK: Why Not XOM?", BreckHutHigh asked the members: "What about the long road trips with kids?" This week it is put to everyone again. The button below opens the small thread re-asking it - read what others have said so far, then give your own answer as an ordinary reply.

My simple summary is that Geico has changed very little when it comes to paying (or denying) claims. 35% in 2015, 37% in 2025 denied. The big boys in the game appear to have a larger denial percentage as well as a broader jump over this period.

Would like comment from others, if they read this differently.

No but your summary (for non-subscribers) leaves out the difference in the numbers presented, which is HUGE.

Liberty Bibberty went from 29% to 54% in the past 10 years.
State Farm from 26% to 47% in a slightly shorter period.
Progressive from 35% to 46% in half that.

However GEICO’s small increase was only shown over a couple years, and we don’t know anything about it from about 2018 forward. (It’s a very rough graph, so all approximations are, uh, approximate.)

Anyway to me those are astonishingly high numbers. And here’s the really scary part:

The near flip-of-a-coin chance of being left empty-handed on liability and medical claims, and the yearslong trend toward relatively fewer payouts, mirrors what’s happening to homeowners and their insurance coverage, the Journal previously reported.
