The week's question
In December 2024, in the thread "Re: BRK: Why Not XOM?", BreckHutHigh asked the members: "What about the long road trips with kids?" This week it is put to everyone again. The button below opens the small thread re-asking it - read what others have said so far, then give your own answer as an ordinary reply.

"This article was mostly over my head, but this author is claiming Apple will win the AI race by selling the equipment to run AI models at home, or at smaller businesses who can no longer afford data center token costs. Is he correct? Hope so!"

It's over everyone's head! Anyone saying they have a full grasp over AI is selling you a bridge to Brooklyn (including the people knee deep in AI). With that said there are certain things we can deduce at this point and here's my Jr. Varsity take on the whole thing......

1. Everyone hates AI! This is the first time in the history of human development where the creators of the next great thing managed to scare the living **** out of everyone with our shiny toy. The idea that AI is/was going to replace everyone is patently absurd. The technology cannot do that, nor should it.

2. With that said AI will unquestionably make human efficiency significantly better while creating a minor and replaceable disruptions in certain industries. Everyone sitting at home eating ice cream and waiting for their monthly dividend check from the machines was an unnecessary fable told by the eggheads that created this thing, and to be fair to them, it's clear that communicating with forethought and compassion is not their strong point!

3. How absurdly dumb is it that we created a technology where you could highjack someone's identity with ZERO consequences and for your own use? Any zit faced teenager could create a video of Warren Buffett telling everyone to put put their life savings in bitcoin with the intention of getting that video passed around the world as quickly as possible. But if an accredited writer for a reputable newspaper did the same thing they would be fired the next day, with law suits immediately slapped on them and possibly being frog marched out of their offices in handcuffs. Where on god's green earth is that even remotely logical??

3. The dot com bubble was the last mania where something grew out of control without the horse getting ahead of the apple cart. Yes it was a bubble but the build out was ok and society at large was not really being damaged. That went out the window with social media and clearly AI. In a nutshell, tech got too big and our regulators lost the battle of keeping the evil few in check for the betterment of everyone else.

4. Regarding investing, Apple may just be the winner in this whole thing by having done absolutely nothing while everyone else slogged it out. Much like the dot com build out, I suspect the AI build out will eventually be good for society but who the winners will be is awfully hard to see right now (at least from my admittedly myopic view). I suspect there will be a handful of big winners from those that slogged it out, a large number from companies that gain the efficiencies from the technology and some unforeseen winners that aren't even in existence. In 2000 while everyone was rushing to get their dog collar orders in on pets.com Mark Zuckerberg wasn't even rating girls as a freshman at Harvard! Who'da thunk he'd be part of the evil few today??

5. It's clear there's a large amount of chicanery going on around AI. I know that's not breaking news but there's obviously a day that's going to need to be reckoned with. The size and scope of which I have no idea but I suspect it will be large.
