I’ve been quite obsessed with keeping MAGI low enough to get meaningful ACA tax subsidies. That got much more difficult this year, when the subsidy cliff came back. Roth conversions have been off the table so far. But yes, ideally we want to get some into Roth accounts before RMDs.
When I retire fully my plan is to use Roth conversions to generate enough taxable income to qualify for ACA but stay below the cliff. Right now I’m working about half-time and still putting as much as possible into the solo 401k and IRAs to get that MAGI low enough.
