The week's question
In December 2024, in the thread "Re: BRK: Why Not XOM?", BreckHutHigh asked the members: "What about the long road trips with kids?" This week it is put to everyone again. The button below opens the small thread re-asking it - read what others have said so far, then give your own answer as an ordinary reply.

That seems daft. Can they compel you to reveal whether or not you've enabled biomarker unlocking? That's a thing in your mind!

Fingerprints have been used as evidence for years. They are biomarkers.

What’s the difference between a thumbprint on a screen and a thumbprint on an ink blotter or object you might have handled?

For that matter, what’s the difference between a face scan performed by an officer with your phone and a digital photograph taken down at the station by a desk sergeant?

I’m more than simply curious. My wife and I are considering a short 3-4 day trip into Canada in September.

One option- take our phones with us.

Another option- pick up a burner phone and leave our phones at home.

Third option- do the trip old style like we used to before cell or mobile phones- get trip maps from AAA and tell everyone that we’ll be out of the country and unreachable for the duration.

We’re leaning toward option #3, while acknowledging that we’ll be without GPS. The issue of family being able to get ahold of us in an emergency can be handled the old style way- give them the telephone numbers of the places we’ll be staying. Also, we’ll download and print our tickets to the plays we’ll see in Stratford,ON, as well as the hotels/B&Bs in Stratford and Niagra-on-the-Lake.

Another old style thing that is happening at this exact instant...... we live in a small town and by small, I mean SMALL. Perhaps 50 houses, one church and a small country store that doesn’t open till 9 and closes at 7...... except on Sundays when it closes at 6.

During the summer, my wife and I spend the first hour or two on the front porch with our dog and cups of coffee- and at this very moment, across the street in our neighbor’s yard not more than 35 yards from where we sit- is a big fat doe, grazing in our neighbor’s lawn.

Of course she’s a doe; if she wasn’t, she’d have a rack on her head that would be fully grown out by this time of year.

We see deer all the time, but usually they’re ambling through, not pausing for five minutes to nibble on the grass, less than 50 feet from the road.

It always amazes me how a big deer can have such slender legs. Of course they’re slender; they’re made for speed. But they look so fragile.

And there she stands- nibbling for ten seconds and then up with her head, her radar ears fully extended and scanning for danger. And after a few seconds, she’s back to nibbling.

She know’s I’m here, because when her head comes up, she’s looking strait at me, those radar ears positioned to hear any noise I might make. But then her head goes back down to nibbling. The breeze is not carrying my scent in her direction, so she hasn’t figured me out yet, but she knows something is amiss because she keeps checking in my direction.

Neither has she figured out our dog, who seems to be oblivious to the doe’s presence. The doe can’t smell us, and the dog can’t smell her. And nobody’s moving much...... until just now, when she ambled off and into the trees.
