The week's question
In December 2024, in the thread "Re: BRK: Why Not XOM?", BreckHutHigh asked the members: "What about the long road trips with kids?" This week it is put to everyone again. The button below opens the small thread re-asking it - read what others have said so far, then give your own answer as an ordinary reply.

This is what is coming out of the woodwork:

When Reagan appointed David Stockman to be head of OMB, a special election was organized to fill his House seat, representing rural, southwest Michigan. I was in grad school at the time. One of my profs lived in Stockman's district. I saw one of the candidates for that seat on TV. Commented to my prof that he seemed like quite a piece of work. The prof said "oh, the Nazi?"

We should probably be more worried, not by people like that being on the ballot, but when people that diverge from the "mainstream" are cancelled, preemptively.

I had a bit of a flake for a Congressman, some years ago. Michigan requires incumbents to file nomination petitions, the same as challengers. My existing Congressman, who I sort of liked, discovered, too late, that his staff forged a lot of signatures on the petitions. So, the petitions were thrown out. He resigned his seat, rather than even serving out the remaining months of his existing term. It was too late for the GOP to get another decent candidate on the ballot. The only other Repub on the ballot was a reindeer herding flake. He won. Of course, the GOP put up a decent candidate two years later, and the flake was gone.
