The week's question
In December 2024, in the thread "Re: BRK: Why Not XOM?", BreckHutHigh asked the members: "What about the long road trips with kids?" This week it is put to everyone again. The button below opens the small thread re-asking it - read what others have said so far, then give your own answer as an ordinary reply.

I ran across this:

SNIP Trump has signaled he doesn’t want to revisit one of the defining fights of his first term in office — the failed effort to repeal the Affordable Care Act. Instead, Trump and Congressional Republicans have said they want to bring down costs within the ACA and possibly let the current enhanced tax credits expire.

Trump will have a Republican Senate to help implement his agenda and confirm his nominees, as the GOP picked up the required seats to take back the Senate majority. The Associated Press has not yet called which party will control the House of Representatives. SNIP

So if they let the enhanced tax credits expire, many people will not be able to afford ACA plans. Many of these people have their own businesses, but will have to find an employer with a good health plan if these credits go away.

I am coming to grips with my own healthcare. I have good healthcare with FEPBlue, a Federal program. I kept it for 9 years while in the Philippines to cover anything catastrophic - only one hospital in Cebu took it though. If I left it, I could not get back in. Now I am going to combine it with Medicare A&B, go to basic instead of standard and save some money that way - though basic is a PPO. Medicare Part D figures in there somewhere. :) They have a program with that I need to look into further.

So I'm looking at ACA for my wife(56), but I could bring her onto my basic FEPBlue which seems reasonable, but my out of packet max goes from $7,500 to $15,000. It should be 7500 each - annoying. So I'm struggling to better understand both FEP and ACA to choose good coverage for her that isn't costly. But the ACA is a political football. What a country. :)
