The week's question
In December 2024, in the thread "Re: BRK: Why Not XOM?", BreckHutHigh asked the members: "What about the long road trips with kids?" This week it is put to everyone again. The button below opens the small thread re-asking it - read what others have said so far, then give your own answer as an ordinary reply.

I see Abel as the catalyst here.
He has underperforming assets
Abel doesn't need to be perfect but he DOES need to do something.
History will show that we were all lulled to sleep over the past 15 years.

At least with regard to improvements in ongoing operations, he is far from a catalyst and it's hard to be wildly bullish. Abel was vice chairman for non-insurance operations for 8 (2018 - 2025) of the above 15 years. He oversaw all non-insurance operations (energy, BNSF, manufacturing, retail, etc.) Did anyone prevent him from improving operations? Did Buffett tell him to wait till he became CEO before implementing improvements? I would imagine the "low-hanging" ideas are all already implemented. I think it's wishful thinking to imagine that there will be dramatic improvements in ongoing operations.

Yes, he may be more aggressive than Buffett in capital allocation, particularly buybacks.

Overall, cautiously optimistic may be a better stance to take than wildly bullish to avoid disappointment!
