By fortuitous circumstance I got to know Jim and Marilyn Simons a little bit over the years, and while he was a pill about certain things he was basically a very decent guy who made a ton of money and decided to use most of it to make the world a better place. Everyone knows about his work with STEM, but not so many know about the anesthesia machine for rural clinics that came out of the Nick Simons Foundation, or the charter schools and tutorial programs in East Harlem, or many many other projects that the Simons helped. Fortunately Marilyn Simons, like Ruth Gottesman, is there to carry on, and I suspect she will do something significant as well. She is a wonder.
