I would site the example of Will's response in Red Dragon to Hanibal Lecter as an example that being smart is not exactly a pre-determinant of success.....

LECTER: Then by implication you think you're smarter than I am because it was you that caught me.

WILL: No, I know I'm not smarter than you.

Lecter: Then how did you catch me?

Will: You had.... disadvantages.

Lecter: What disadvantages?

Will: You're insane!
