Naval ships belong in classes with naming conventions for each one.

During WW2, it was:

Submarines = fish
Escorts and destroyers = people
Light cruisers = smaller cities (Helena)
Cruisers = bigger cities (Indianapolis)and territories (Alaska)
Battleships = states (Iowa, Missouri, etc).
Aircraft Carriers = tended to have traditional Royal Navy names (think Wasp and Enterprise) and famous places (Saratoga, Lexington)

In the modern era, aircraft carriers have been trending toward Presidents. The Lincoln, Ford, Kennedy, Roosevelt, Reagan etc.

Dorie Miller is a great American, no doubt. But his name should be on an Arleigh Burke DDG instead of a carrier.

Why? Because he was never a President.

Are there exceptions? Yes. The John Stennis is named for a Senator who did the Navy a lot of solids while in Congress.

You may hate it but there will be a USS Donald J. Trump one day and it will be an aircraft carrier.

The other notable exception is the USS Jimmy Carter, a submarine. Why? The Navy chose to honor his legacy as a submariner.
