...I think that's wrong. In a universe where the fiscal problems are so intense that they can't be ignored or put off anymore, then a governing Democratic party would choose to raise taxes rather than cut SS or Medicare.
I agree with that. And then they'll lose the next election because they raised taxes.
Meanwhile, I have ZERO confidence that Reps won't make drastic cuts to SS. Several already advocate this.
Plus, demographics are changing. Baby boomers are dying. That bubble of recipients is going away. Meanwhile, birthrates are low, so young workers aren't filling the ranks of those paying into the system in sufficient quantities. And with the Rep aversion to immigration, we aren't filling those ranks at all. Reps will use all that to kill it. And Medicare. As a previous Rep POTUS candidate said, "we are going to take away healthcare for Americans". A Freudian slip, I'm sure. Or maybe he just wasn't using his internal voice.
