why engineers use dB to express power levels

Agree that the bel (why they lopped a consonant off of AG Bell's name?) is a pretty useless unit unless scaled.
The watt seems pretty useful, however: milliwatt to gigawatt all have common usages. Likewise distance (microns to kilometers, although admittedly after that it goes to light-years and AUs), mass (micrograms to kilos covers a wide variety of applications).
Time is more difficult - explaining to a Zorg the second, hour, day, month, year would be like trying to rationalize the Easter Bunny
Seems to me all I ever see are microfarads, although the ohm, newton, and joule all seem useful.
What else did the SI naming boys miss by a factor of 10, 100, 1000? The Tesla, maybe?
