He's certainly NOT the most successful businessman of the 20th century. He's all marketing. Somehow, people were wowed. Even as he filed for bankruptcy numerous times, and almost every venture he undertook failed (even a casino!!).

I read an analysis during his first run (2016), and the conclusion was that had he simply put his inheritance into an index fund, he'd have been better off than engaging in all of his so-called "deals". It's 9 years later, but I suspect that remains true today.

IMO, his only real skill is marketing. He's always been a terrible product, but he markets himself well.
