It's funny that the "soft on crime" shows up in this thread. I do agree with Dope that conservatives generally ask for greater consequences as the #1 crime fighting tool, while liberals look for methods to reduce the need/desire to commit crimes in the first place. Many of the Dem's attempts at this have failed miserably. OTOH, there is currently lots of positive evidence that supervised residential housing works well for the homeless mentally ill. Occasionally one of these hail mary programs pays off.
OTOH, nobody ever said: "Since it is life in prison rather than just 20 years I won't kill my kids".
