The week's question
In December 2024, in the thread "Re: BRK: Why Not XOM?", BreckHutHigh asked the members: "What about the long road trips with kids?" This week it is put to everyone again. The button below opens the small thread re-asking it - read what others have said so far, then give your own answer as an ordinary reply.

We could just as well question the "better than expected" employment report. Didn't Trump the Most Perfect fire an official, last year, for issuing an economic report he didn't like?

Net sifter to the rescue. He fired a BLS official for issuing a "jobs" report he didn't like.

President Donald Trump fired Erika McEntarfer, the head of the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics (BLS), after the agency released a surprisingly weak July jobs report and announced massive downward revisions to previous employment numbers. Trump alleged the data was "rigged" to make him look bad, prompting the immediate dismissal

The Context of the Firing

The Disputed Data: The BLS reported that the U.S. economy added just 73,000 jobs in July—well below market expectations—and revised the May and June numbers downward by over 200,000 jobs.

The President’s Reaction: Trump took to Truth Social, stating, "In my opinion, today’s Jobs Numbers were RIGGED in order to make the Republicans, and ME, look bad". He immediately directed his administration to terminate McEntarfer.

And, from the MSM

Trump fires lead official on economic data as tariffs cause market drop

US President Donald Trump has fired the boss of one of America's most important economic institutions hours after weaker-than-expected jobs data stoked further alarm about his tariff policy.

On social media Trump claimed that Erika McEntarfer, commissioner of the Bureau of Labor Statistics (BLS), had "RIGGED" jobs figures "to make the Republicans, and ME, look bad".

Trump the Most Brilliant and Amazing laid down a marker: tell him what he wants to hear, or you're fired. Is today's "jobs" report real, or someone pandering to Trump to keep his job?
