The week's question
In December 2024, in the thread "Re: BRK: Why Not XOM?", BreckHutHigh asked the members: "What about the long road trips with kids?" This week it is put to everyone again. The button below opens the small thread re-asking it - read what others have said so far, then give your own answer as an ordinary reply.

I find it amusing that you care so much about what some irrelevant, unknown poster on some obscure platform in the backwater of the internet uses as your name.

Here's the thing about names.

When you name something, you assert control over it. You name your pet. You name your children. Many people name their homes and cars. (For example, my car is named Trophy Wife. It doesn't love me and wants all of my money.) They assert dominion or control over all of those things.

That is part of why Trump has to find names for all of his opponents. He attempts to assert control over people by re-naming them. It's not just a fun little thing for a sociopath like Trump. It may be a subconscious thing to him, as his mental illness is mostly untreated, but it is very real. He tries to claim control by re-naming people. Yes, generally it's a play on their existing name, but to the extent it sticks, it's still a form of control or domination -- a way to demean people. It's the same as schoolyard bullies taunting their victims by calling them names - exerting control over them.

So yes, I'm a bit sensitive to naming.

PS - Also, using Pete is how my father and I could tell which one of us was in trouble with mom. When she yells "PETE", my dad is in trouble. When she yells "PETER", I'm the one in trouble.
