You missed the part where SPLC were actively *funding* the groups they're purportedly in opposition to. Then fundraising off the terrorist activities they paid for.When I was working at the pump seal company, I was constantly being dunned for money. Money for the United Way. Money for house warming gifts. Money for birthday presents for honchos. If you don't pay up, your job is in jeopardy.
Same thing when you "belong" to a hate group: Pay for the white robes. Pay for the crosses being burned. Pay to fund their recruiting efforts. If you don't pay, you become suspect, at the least.
The SPLC reimbursed it's informants for their expenses in remaining a member in good standing, of the hate groups they were informing on. The DOJ says that in their charges.

Among the expenses the two were reimbursed for, per the court documents, were all the costs “incurred for cross-burning events, to include the wood and fuel used.”
Expenses for “extremist group rallies,” establishing new chapters of the groups, publishing “racist paraphernalia” and other “extremist literature” were also covered.
The SPLC’s attorneys responded in court papers that it got “helpful information” from the confidential informants that was later provided to law enforcement.
“Department of Justice also knows that these confidential informants helped law enforcement put violent extremists in jail,” they wrote, referencing at least two past convictions.
