The week's question
In December 2024, in the thread "Re: BRK: Why Not XOM?", BreckHutHigh asked the members: "What about the long road trips with kids?" This week it is put to everyone again. The button below opens the small thread re-asking it - read what others have said so far, then give your own answer as an ordinary reply.

"The veil of ignorance is a thought experiment that asks you to design the rules of society without knowing who you will be in it: rich or poor, talented or not, of any race, gender, or generation. Choose the rules from behind that veil, and you choose fairly. John Rawls built it in A Theory of Justice (1971, revised 1999) as the centerpiece of his account of justice. The device forces self-interest to produce impartial principles."

While I am a huge Warren Buffett fan (so I have heard deeper tellings of this story many times before) and I agree with it as a thought experiment. I also realize that it falls apart in reality due to human ignorance and ability to rationally think.

Put another way, despite the fact that there is a mountain of evidence showing systematic racism in the U.S. justice system and a mountain of evidence showing systematic racism in the U.S. economic system and a mountain of evidence showing systematic racism in the U.S. educational system, there is a decent percentage of MAGA Cultists who genuinely believe it is an advantage to be black in the U.S.
