Folks pay Carmax prices because they know that nobody can get a better deal than them at Carmax.It makes no logical sense, but the fear of not getting the absolute best price is extremely powerful in many people. I worked as a finance manager in a traditional dealership for a few years, and many customers made non optimal choices. They would come into the finance office with a dazed look on their face and make emotional choices more often than not. The fear of not being a good negotiator or the distaste of negotiations at all will lead people to pay extra for many services.
