The week's question
In December 2024, in the thread "Re: BRK: Why Not XOM?", BreckHutHigh asked the members: "What about the long road trips with kids?" This week it is put to everyone again. The button below opens the small thread re-asking it - read what others have said so far, then give your own answer as an ordinary reply.

As for the oil infrastructure, Canada's well aware where most of their oil goes.

Evidently not. After Ford and other Canadian officials made noises about Canada shutting off the flow of oil to the United States, Danielle Smith had to step in and show them the map of where all the pipelines are.

Canada is smart to be taking the approach they're taking.

If by "Canada" you mean "Canada's liberal party", who is putting their political interests ahead of what's best for actual Canada and broader North America, I agree. Their stupid elbows up thing has the Canadian dander all fluffy and the Conservatives are having to sit there and watch from the sidelines. Of course, what they're doing isn't helping sell national unity in the province of Alberta too well.

Trump isn't doing this because Canada is soft on fentanyl, or illegal immigration, or economic security, or whatever reason of the week they're giving now. He's just mercantilist at heart. He wants the tariffs because he wants the tariffs. He believes that any trade deficit means you're "losing" that interaction, and wants big tariffs on Canada because they have a trade surplus with us (see the oil above) and he believes that if we bully them enough they'll just do what we wan.

With respect, I would suggest that you go look closer at what Lutnick and the others are saying about the deal. This deal is about North American supply chain provenance.
