New research suggests our ancestors may have gotten a lot of protein from—wait for it—maggots. Researchers surmised this by studying nitrogen isotope ratios in ancient human bones and how those ratios change in maggots feeding on rotted meat.

Researcher Herman Pontzer said, “I find the evidence here pretty convincing.”

This aligns with what we covered about the bad carnivore diet documentary: Our ancestors likely ate what was available. They were food opportunists, not nutrition influencers fretting about the optimal human diet.

TL;DR: If you want to truly eat paleo, eat maggots.

Humans eating insects and creepy crawlees has been known at least since I was a little boy. It's been on National geographic and PBS documentaries a jillion times. It's usable protein you don't have to cook.

It's usable protein you don't have to cook.

Ate bugs when I was a kid- chocolate covered ants and fried grasshoppers.

Tonight I made an eggplant lasagna and sautéed Swiss chard from my garden. Much better.

Would eat bugs again if that’s all I had, but it’s not all I have so I don’t.

It would take a lot of hunger to make me eat maggots though.

But again- why? I prefer to keep the matter as a thought experiment, not a meal experiment.

The world that would make maggots a real meal option is not one I care to visit.
