From CNBC:
“The decision marks a break from the pledge Buffett made two decades ago. In a 2006 letter to Bill and Melinda Gates, Buffett wrote that he was "irrevocably committing" to make annual gifts of Berkshire shares to their foundation "throughout my lifetime," provided that at least one of them remained actively involved in the organization.”
I’d say Buffett was caught between a rock a hard place on this one, or rather he never expected such a storm reason to break his commitment. Other quotes in the CNBC piece show he’s stopped talking to Bill Gates while investigations happen, a respectable choice. I feel he does that anytime there might be nonpublic information bouncing around.
