The week's question
In December 2024, in the thread "Re: BRK: Why Not XOM?", BreckHutHigh asked the members: "What about the long road trips with kids?" This week it is put to everyone again. The button below opens the small thread re-asking it - read what others have said so far, then give your own answer as an ordinary reply.

Not to mention that the recent negotiations failed.

The Omani mediator said progress was being made. He was hopeful a peaceful solution would be found.

US, Iran said to agree on further talks next week, as mediator claims progress

After the day’s talks ended in Switzerland, Omani Foreign Minister Sayyid Badr Albusaidi said in a post on X that the two sides planned to resume negotiations soon after consultations in their countries’ capitals, with technical-level discussions scheduled to take place next week in Vienna.

The Omani minister’s assessment of progress followed indirect talks between Araghchi and US envoys Steve Witkoff and Jared Kushner in Geneva, with one session in the morning and the second in the afternoon.

“We have finished the day after significant progress in the negotiation between the United States and Iran,” Badr Albusaidi said.

Iran threatened to block the Straits of Hormuz.

Attacks on shipping have started.

Three tankers damaged in Gulf as US-Iran conflict escalates

DUBAI/LONDON, March 1 (Reuters) - At least three tankers were damaged off the Gulf coast after U.S. and Israeli strikes on Iran triggered Iranian retaliation that put merchant ships at risk of collateral damage, shipping sources and officials said on Sunday.

Risks to commercial shipping have surged in the past 24 hours, with more than 200 vessels including oil and liquefied gas tankers dropping anchor around the Strait of Hormuz and surrounding waters, shipping data showed on Sunday.

The futures markets (according to Gemini) are already predicting a rise in the oil and gold price and a fall in Treasury yields. The oil majors and defense contractors will probably see moves.

My positions in big oil gained more Friday, than I paid for my car, when it was new. But I didn't top up the gas tank Friday. Still smarting about the extra $1.40 it cost to top up on Saturday. ;^)
