The week's question
In December 2024, in the thread "Re: BRK: Why Not XOM?", BreckHutHigh asked the members: "What about the long road trips with kids?" This week it is put to everyone again. The button below opens the small thread re-asking it - read what others have said so far, then give your own answer as an ordinary reply.

WASHINGTON — The White House denied responsibility Monday for the disappearance of a cherry tree from a public golf course being redesigned for President Trump, suggesting that the tree may have removed itself.

“There is absolutely no evidence that President Trump chopped down a cherry tree,” a White House spokesperson said. “The president owns many beautiful golf courses and has people for that.”

More than 60 trees have reportedly been removed from Washington’s East Potomac Golf Links as the administration prepares for a major overhaul of the publicly owned course. The Interior Department has called the removals routine maintenance.

Apparently, removing dozens of trees before rebuilding a golf course is now maintenance.

The episode has drawn an unfortunate comparison to George Washington, whose legendary confession about chopping down a cherry tree was once used to teach American children the value of honesty.

The Trump version would be considerably shorter.

“I never saw the tree. I never touched the tree. The hatchet belonged to somebody else. The photographs are fake. And frankly, the tree was probably dying.”

Schoolchildren would then be instructed that young George was completely exonerated.

The original Washington story may have been a myth.

The updated one feels entirely plausible.
