In the early 2000s we built a multi-level luxury rental with a 12+ person capacity in Manuel Antonio, Costa Rica. We called it CasaTolteca. It was immediately successful, and we sold it a year-and-a-half later at double our initial investment, in addition to yielding highly rewarding rental income during the interim.

We had visited there initially with the thought of possibly living there in retirement, and opted for the investment instead, while remaining in the US to be in closer proximity to our four sons and their families.

The people there were very friendly; many spoke English. We enjoyed many visits to our rental property, which has since been recognized as "best luxury rental property" in Manuel Antonio, which is perhaps the most luxurious region in the country. It has an ocean view, and hosts an amazing array of wildlife. Here's a link. The property remains largely unchanged since we sold it.
