The week's question
In December 2024, in the thread "Re: BRK: Why Not XOM?", BreckHutHigh asked the members: "What about the long road trips with kids?" This week it is put to everyone again. The button below opens the small thread re-asking it - read what others have said so far, then give your own answer as an ordinary reply.

Not Richard. A socialist that won the primary in Florida. Wow. Florida. Rumor is she couldn't even afford tv ads, and she still won.

That was certainly a surprise to a lot of observers. It certainly means that the GOP ads here in the Miami-Dade market are going to be even more strident and annoying.

I wonder if it will affect the national party and donor participation in the gubernatorial and downballot races. Jolly's always been a longshot, but in a D+6/7 national environment he's got a bit of a chance in the governor race. And Florida's got several of the competitive seats in this cycle, and the Democrats can't afford to let the GOP pick them all up if they want to take the House.

On the other hand, the national party was always going to be reticent to pour too much money into Florida; I'm not sure they would have put much more money into a Vindman campaign than a Nixon one. Having a Democratic socialist in the other big race in the top of the ticket doesn't help, because that brand is really bad among the Hispanic voters that the Democrats were hoping to win back - especially Venezuelans upset with Trump's ending TPS and cozying up to the existing regime.

We'll see what happens.
