The week's question
In December 2024, in the thread "Re: BRK: Why Not XOM?", BreckHutHigh asked the members: "What about the long road trips with kids?" This week it is put to everyone again. The button below opens the small thread re-asking it - read what others have said so far, then give your own answer as an ordinary reply.

1.)They have to spend way more money recruiting. An already broke, dirty, nasty city has to spend more.

2.)They lower standards for officers and cops vis a vis hiring.

3.)They have a less effective force and crime goes up in NYC.

SEATTLE — Despite major investments from the city to recruit and retain officers, the Seattle Police Department (SPD) has dropped to staffing levels not seen since the early '90s.

The city started offering hiring bonuses of up to $7,500 for new recruits and $30,000 for experienced officers in 2022, but SPD data shows more officers have left than have been hired since last year.

“The city’s police staffing crisis, now in its third year, has resulted in only 937 police officers available for deployment in the city as of August 31, 2023, the lowest number of in-service officers since 1991 and significantly below per-capita staffing relative to similarly situated jurisdictions,” a briefing memo in Seattle Mayor Bruce Harrell’s 2024 budget proposal states.
