Taibbi's latest is worth a read to consider why our non-urban-elite populace is angry enough to consider voting for Orange Julius, and how insane the Democratic party machine and media factory are for continuing to demonize non-believers with self-righteous antagonistic screeds like the new book "White Rural Rage".

Snips:
a vicious manifesto in the anti-populist tradition nailed by Thomas Frank in The People, No. ....
The theme is back, condescension multiplied. Despite a pandemic that just graphically demonstrated the social contributions of farmers, truckers, train operators, and other “essential workers,” the people working those jobs were demonized during the crisis as murderous horse-paste eaters and insurrectionists. Their chief crimes: protesting lockdowns and school closures that disproportionately affected them, and being consumers of supposed foreign-inspired “misinformation” that led them to refuse appropriate political choices offered them.

Nobel-winning columnist Paul Krugman of the New York Times spent the last year telling “ignorant” Middle America its negative feelings about the economy are “demonstrably false,” because despite what their bank accounts or home evaluations might say, “Bidenomics is still working very well.”

To recap: globalization and technological change have devastated small towns and made the urban keyboard warriors richer, and rural voters can’t move to the cities because they can’t afford to. However, instead of being grateful for the “huge de facto transfers of money from rich, urban states like New Jersey to poor, relatively rural states like West Virginia” in the form of federal programs paid by the taxes of luckier citizens like Krugman, small town America is unaccountably hostile.

Taibbi just tells us they want to give us the middle finger. We know that.

But it's not the struggling white suburbanite that is devastating rural areas, in fact the urban area the white folk are in may come in disfavor and they have to move. No matter who you are, plumber or software jock, you may have to move to the upcoming area and leave behind friends and family. Or you can become the roughnecker out in Montana who supports a family back home. The economy has been doing well, but we still need to reduce mortgage interest, get rid of the myriad of companies that want to buy up homes and flip them for profit, turn them into BnB moneymakers, and create renters from former house owners.

The other problem is that wages are forced down. So we go to two worker families, and now one has to get really good wages in order to do well. If you're both getting mediocre wages, rent may be all you can do - and work for some place that has a decent retirement. But lots of workers have no real retirement. Social security, medicare, and a little savings is it. And those who don't have that just generally subsist and die quicker.

It's a myth that Trump supporters are low income people. They may live in rural areas, but they generally make a pretty good living. MAGA world has its roots in the Tea Party movement. Remember Joe the Plumber? He owned his own plumbing business and was pretty well off. MAGA includes thousands of small-business owners like Joe.

Right now, if you ask Trump supporters what their number 1 issue is, they'll say it's the Southern Border. They're not saying that making ends meet is their top concern. Can you imagine Republicans in New Hampshire - 1,000+ miles away from the Mexican border - saying that the border is their No 1 issue?

https://thehill.com/homenews/campaign/4422273-immi...

Have farmers forgotten that Trump's China trade war tariffs hurt them? That China retaliated with export bans that led to farmers losing income? Yes, I know Trump gave them money to compensate, but most farmers would rather have the free trade than get govt handouts.

Working class auto workers should remember that it was the Obama/Biden administration that bailed out US automakers in 2009, and is the reason why they still have jobs today. Biden is the only US president to gave ever joined auto workers in a picket line.

In 2016, exit polls found that "The median household income of a Trump voter so far in the primaries is about $72,000". That was higher than the median income for Hillary Clinton supporters, which was around $61,000.

"In Florida, for instance, the median household income for Trump voters was about $70,000, compared with $48,000 for the state as a whole. "

So, yeah, these are not poor people. They're xenophobic people.

<Remember Joe the Plumber? He owned his own plumbing business and was pretty well off. MAGA includes thousands of small-business owners like Joe.>

You mean MAGA includes thousands of delusional liars just like Joe?

Joe lied, he never owned a plumbing business:

"Regarding his statement to Barack Obama about intending to buy the plumbing firm that employed him, Wurzelbacher later said that the idea of buying the company was discussed six years prior. (He never actually bought it.) Court records show that Wurzelbacher made $40,000 in 2006."

"Wurzelbacher acknowledged that he didn’t even have a plumber’s license, saying he didn’t need one because he worked for small plumbing company owned by someone else."

have become a Taibbi skeptic.
he let himself become a useful tool for musk during the twitter acquisition disaster.
when Taibbi wanted to be more than friends, musk decided he needed no hangers-on reminding him of burning $40B.

now in the 'spat' phase of his affair w/musk, i see Taibbi publications as probably greasing his future interests; maybe politics. (if Kitara Ravache can get GOP endorsement til the end, why not?)

I'm very disappointed in Taibbi. I used to enjoy reading him. But there is big money on the right wing side of things.

The point is that, mechinv's post above is exemplary of the problems with Democratic messaging going into the election.

Pump up all the points he makes about the stupid, negative-effect tariffs; the help given to the auto workers, the attempts to help lower income people. Keep making the case that way.

But stereotypical messaging based on classist box placement is just unnecessary. From someone who lives in NH, there are thousands of Trumpers up here who don't make much money but think Trump is "their guy" and don't think he's dangerous, as we NeverTrumpers do. I don't get it either, but that doesn't mean they deserve to be classified and denigrated - and monetized - as dangerous middle-class xenophobic bigots.

Whatever.

And then there's this:

In the popular imagination of many Americans, particularly those on the left side of the political spectrum, the typical MAGA supporter is a rural resident who hates Black and Brown people, loathes liberals, loves god and guns, believes in myriad conspiracy theories, has little faith in democracy, and is willing to use violence to achieve their goals, as thousands did on Jan. 6.

According to a new book, White Rural Rage: The Threat to American Democracy, these aren’t hurtful, elitist stereotypes by Acela Corridor*denizens and bubble-dwelling liberals… they’re facts.

The authors, Tom Schaller, a professor at the University of Maryland, Baltimore County, and Paul Waldman, a former columnist at The Washington Post, persuasively argue that most of the negative stereotypes liberals hold about rural Americans are actually true.

https://www.thedailybeast.com/white-rural-trump-su...

Overall, we rate the Daily Beast Left-Biased based on story selection and editorial positions that favor the left. We also rate them Mixed for reporting due to failed fact checks.

*Acela Corridor may refer to: Northeast Corridor, a train line for Amtrak's Acela trains. Northeast Megalopolis, the megalopolis of cities from Boston to Washington that the Acela train serves.
----------------------------------------
And here's the old master Krugman on it:

Business types and some economists may talk glowingly about the virtues of creative destruction, but the process can be devastating economically and socially for those who find themselves on the destruction side of the equation. This is especially true when technological change undermines not just individual workers but whole communities.

This process and its effects are laid out in devastating, terrifying and baffling detail in “White Rural Rage: The Threat to American Democracy,” a new book by Tom Schaller and Paul Waldman. I say “devastating” because the hardship of rural Americans is real, “terrifying” because the political backlash to this hardship poses a clear and present danger to our democracy and “baffling” because at some level I still don’t get the politics. (Imagine that - I don't get it either) :)

As a lifelong rural resident and a former conservative they were able to accurately express the phenomenon I’ve seen occur here. I was falling prey to the right wing propagandists myself but over time I saw them moving away from ideas of freedom and democracy. I’ve seen where my fellow rural Americans have gone and it’s been astonishing to watch them wholeheartedly swallow everything. Very tribal in the thinking. Being a part of the community means accepting crazy conspiracies and thinking city ppl are coming to do something to you. It’s not very constructive. Thank you for writing this book, you got it right, I’m a witness.

This book is poorly-written, vile hate speech. These authors should be thanked for taking off their masks and advertising their beliefs to the public. This is Marxist orthodoxy. Never forget how much they hate you.

I'm considering it. It's only 320 pages, and I have trouble finishing heavy boring tomes.

Interesting... if you recall, Taibbi made his name while at RollingStone as the only (or at least most vocal) strong critic of the outrageous global financial crisis created by, monetized by and blatantly lied about by major financial institutions & investment banks; with no jail time for any of the perpetrators of the fraud.
