The week's question
In December 2024, in the thread "Re: BRK: Why Not XOM?", BreckHutHigh asked the members: "What about the long road trips with kids?" This week it is put to everyone again. The button below opens the small thread re-asking it - read what others have said so far, then give your own answer as an ordinary reply.

in Copenhagen (and not only in Copenhagen) people suspect a far more irrational explanation: Trump just wants the U.S. to look larger on a map

There is another possible explanation, though I doubt Trump could articulate it.

The world is about to separate into major spheres. Russia will take Ukraine, or some part of it as Putin attempts to recreate the golden era (make Russia great again).

China will take Taiwan and the US will be powerless to stop it.

That leaves Europe and the West. Europe is already as consolidated as disparate countries with thousands of year histories can be in such short order. America (Trump) wants to control the larger sphere here, including Greenland and the Panama Canal. And, except for the brown people, Mexico. He and his cohorts wouldn’t mind owning Mexico so long as the people did what they’re told, which seems unlikely, but I won’t be surprised to see an “incursion” (to use the less loaded word) to go after drug lords and gangs. It’s as good an excuse as any.

So that makes the Big Four: Russia, China, US, Europe. That’s pretty much the UN veto coalition, with France & England combined (as they are now and weren’t when the UN was formed) into blocs.
