The week's question
In December 2024, in the thread "Re: BRK: Why Not XOM?", BreckHutHigh asked the members: "What about the long road trips with kids?" This week it is put to everyone again. The button below opens the small thread re-asking it - read what others have said so far, then give your own answer as an ordinary reply.

The BMJ found that coffee drinkers were 17% less likely to die early from any cause,

As this thread veers off topic for the board: if you are 17% less likely to die, then there must be someone who never died, regardless of age.

Another one of these "studies" claimed that tea was an even stronger dementia preventer than coffee. My mom drank multiple cups of tea, daily, most of her adult life. She was institutionalized with dementia at 75.

There is a big difference between the polio vax being 99% effective at preventing paralytic disease, and spending a fortune on coffee, vs filtered water, for a <20% probability of a better outcome.

These days, the media goes into full hysteria mode, forecasting 60mph wind and 1" hail, for a "marginal risk" from the weather service. A "marginal risk" is a 2-4% probability of the conditions they are forecasting. But the media has decided there is profit in scaring people about the weather, so "severe weather" has become a fixture in the "news" every day. Seriously, listen to the nonsense they spew "100 Million people impacted by winter weather!!!!!" when it's January.
