For some reason, full bore proponents of Free Healthcare never, ever, ever want to talk about that stuff. Avoid it like the plague, in fact.

Heck, back when I was a Republican, that was one of my paranoid fears. In fact, I thought the government should do that if we (government) are paying for care. "If I'm paying your medical, no smoking for you!".

If the Fool had saved all those old discussions, you could go back 20 years and look them up.

However, no system in the world operates that way. There is zero reason to believe one we set up here would. In fact, you could NEVER sell the public if that was included. Similarly, you could never sell the public on the idea that they can't choose their own doctor. So your assurance that will never happen is that we live in a democracy where the public will never stand for it. No politician would advocate that if he/she wanted to get elected ever again, and it would be a bludgeon wielded by opponents in elections. It would be a landslide of opposition.

Though, as an aside, with insurance, you already are limited. Your doctor has to be in-network, or you can't get coverage to see him/her. I had to change doctors when I retired because of that. Ironically, in two years when I go on Medicare, if she's still practicing I could go back to her (she takes Medicare).
