Reply to reply: What does it matter whether its thinking?
Wrong question (I think :)
AI makes us to not think. Like water we go the way of least resistance = leave the thinking to AI.
Understandable, completely natural, as it saves effort and energy expenditure (in our energy efficient brains, not in data centers; btw I never understood why everybody is concerned about global warming, but there was no huge revolt about the perversity of crypto mining).
AI is a super useful tool. As we all know it´s a superior search engine (a friend asked for the top speed of the car I drove in the 24h Nürburgring race; as it was not my car and I didn´t know I asked AI "what´s PS and weight of a Citroen AX Sport race car in group F spec", saving me 1/2h of clicking through for a good part useless links).
AI also leads to realisations we otherwise would not have. Though I put a lot of research in developing my fitness routine AI rearranged a few exercises for optimising it´s efficency.
In the matter of my daily smoothie with numerous healthy ingredients I was surprised to be told by AI that while I developed the perfect recipe for staying healthy I should not put banana in it, should eat it separately as it diminishes the health effects of Curcuma or another ingredient (forgotten which one).
That was super useful and optimised things in my life. But the price for this perfection where otherwise there would be imperfection is less own researching --- and less thinking, judging and assessing of what I would have found. AI presents this on a "Golden plate". It´s like the spoiled kid of a wealthy family who grows up with a "Golden spoon", getting all he wants, without having to work and think hard for it as the kid from the poor family would have to. AI spoils us.
The argument is that all that spoiling makes us free to put our energy into more creative endeavours, freeing us from the boring stuff. But it´s depends on ones view of life and it´s meaning whether that boring stuff should not also be part of it.
And to be honest: For me it´s boring to see this board degenerating into an AI-quoting board ("AI says...", followed by an endless AI article). It might save a lot of forth and back between humans thinking and writing themselves, unavoidably presenting flaws in their thinking, lack of knowledge etc. But it reduces real communication between humans with all their flaws by substituting oneself with an external tool.
