Is it not against the law to pass yourself off as having a military rank you didn’t attain, and having military medals you did not earn?
Not a lawyer. However, I would think it would be fraud if you derived any benefit from that. If you just say "I was a major in the Air Force" on a message board, who cares. If you present yourself as such to get on a base (you'll be arrested by people with guns who have no compunction about shooting you!), or get free meals on Veteran's Day, or similar, it's fraud.
