The week's question
In December 2024, in the thread "Re: BRK: Why Not XOM?", BreckHutHigh asked the members: "What about the long road trips with kids?" This week it is put to everyone again. The button below opens the small thread re-asking it - read what others have said so far, then give your own answer as an ordinary reply.

The Jews go back a few millennia and were well established in the area until about the second century CE.

So do the Palestinians.

Back in the day when Abraham came wandering into the area, they were called Amorites, Jebusites, Hivites, Canaanites... all sorts of “ites”, (though no
Stalagtites)

During the Roman occupation, they all got tagged with the name “Palestinians”.

The crusaders called them part of the “Moslem hordes”, and now, thanks to the British Empire adopting the Imperial nomenclature and of the Roman Empire- they’re back to being “Palestinians”.

Strangely, and ironically- there’s another term that appears in most ancient Semitic languages of the Middle East. It was a term used to refer to landless peasants, the rifraff of the land- the people who were no people at all except that they were everywhere.

The term was “hapiru”, and it occurs with minor variations in ancient Egyptian, Babylonian, and Akkadian texts and correspondences of the 2nd and 3rd Millennium bce.

It also occurs in the bible and was adopted as a self identifier by the Hebrews.
