The "Medicare for those who want it" proposal of Paul Krugman and Pete Buttigieg and (maybe?) Abdul El-Sayed is an effort to address that problem a bit, allowing for the possibility of a gradual transition rather than abrupt pivot to mitigation the disruption caused by the change. But that's not necessarily a feasible approach, for some of the reasons discussed in this thread.
Try this one: every US citizen child born after January 1, 2027 is covered by the national health program. Not their parent's employer's program, or CHIP, or state Medicaid. In 65 years, everyone else has either died, or gone on Medicare. Fund the program with a VAT that increases as needed, to cover costs. You will still be fighting the ideology of the last 45 years that the "JCs" are entitled to *all* the money in the country, but if it became illegal to bribe public officials, it might become possible.
Another of El-Sayed's proposals is "money out of politics", which, again, is widely supported by "We The People" but hated by the money interests.
