Not to refute the larger / much more frequent point, but: private buyout firms I have seen take software companies private because the company needs to execute a major refresh/upgrade & re-release of its platform for something like a move to the cloud, or taking advantage of a new tech. They could never get away with it in the public markets because their earnings get crushed for 2 years, but with PE funding they can get it done, refresh the model and release it, get happier and more customers / more competitive, and THEN go public again.
