Using a vulgar colloquialism, the headline on the front page of the Italian newspaper Libero today translated to “Trump is an a**hole.”
A little background here:
This extraordinary, vulgar headline is the direct result of the rapidly escalating diplomatic crisis between Italy and the United States following the G7 summit.
The paper went from running a fawning headline on Wednesday celebrating the "love story" between Giorgia Meloni and Trump, to absolute, unvarnished fury after Trump publicly claimed that Meloni had essentially "begged" him for a photo-op because her popularity was low.
The insult felt personal to Italy's right-wing media ecosystem. In a prominent front-page commentary explaining the headline, Libero's editorial director Alessandro Sallusti explicitly defended the language, writing:
"I'm sorry to say it, but I can't find any other expression for it—and maybe there isn't one: Donald Trump is an idiot [coglione]. Period. There is no point in making circumlocutions or being politically correct about it."
America doesn’t need friends it appears.
