I think there is much more concern with honest governance on the left. The right is obsessed with taking and holding power at all costs.
Sure, but there's plenty of folks on the left that will de-prioritize "honest governance" if it means advancing really core policy goals - or keeping the Republicans from destroying the country.
Maybe it's not 40%. Maybe it's 30%, or a bit lower. But even a terrible Democratic President who gave the left Medicare for All and a progressive Supreme Court would build up a lot of goodwill, and a lot of people willing to rationalize the terribleness a bit and approve of their performance in the job.
The psychological factors you mention also mitigate against the idea that the 38% that support Trump are stupid, rather than simply being far more tolerant of authoritarian governing styles or prioritizing in-group cohesion.
