The week's question
In December 2024, in the thread "Re: BRK: Why Not XOM?", BreckHutHigh asked the members: "What about the long road trips with kids?" This week it is put to everyone again. The button below opens the small thread re-asking it - read what others have said so far, then give your own answer as an ordinary reply.

U.K. says it will introduce digital ID cards, reviving a contentious idea

Britain has not had compulsory identity cards for ordinary citizens since shortly after World War II.

LONDON — British citizens and permanent residents will have to produce a mandatory digital identification card in order to get work, the government announced Friday, reviving an idea that has long been controversial in the U.K.

The government says the plan will help reduce unauthorized immigration by making it harder for people to work in the underground economy

If anything, USians are even more militantly against a "national ID" card, hence the back and forth, for years, about an ID card for legal immigrants, to sort them out from illegals. Now that hysteria about illegals has been turned up to 11, the mob might go along with it. It's a handy way for the Feds to demand everyone show their papers, to obtain an ID card.

Meanwhile, I suspect the DoJ's pressing states for their voter registration files, with names and addresses, might be for some selective enforcement actions. Example, as Michigan is one of the states the DoJ is demanding the files from: Barry County, in rural West Michigan, voted 66% for Trump, in 24, so DoJ looks over the records and says "Barry County's voter qualification process looks good, no further action required". Wayne County voted 62% for Harris, so DoJ says "hmmm, we see problems in Wayne County's process, everyone needs to show their papers, or their voter registration will be voided". This would be more cost effective, as it only targets Dem leading counties, vs having everyone parade through Federal offices showing their papers, for a national ID card, which could snag some MAGAs that have a..."confused" lineage.
