Trump says U.S. will hike Canada auto tariffs to 50% as trade war escalates
President Donald Trump on Monday said the U.S. will raise tariffs on imports of cars, trucks and auto parts from Canada to 50% on Jan. 1, 2027, following a breakdown in trade negotiations last week.
“Canada has been ripping off the United States of America for years,” Trump wrote in a Truth Social post, accusing the long-time trading partner of hurting U.S. farmers through its own tariff policies.cnbc.com - Trump canada auto tariffs trade warOf course, this one has a long lead, so something can be worked out, or his posturing will be forgotten.
The net sifter produced this list of Canadian built models:
Chevrolet Silverado 500 & HD – Oshawa, ON
Chevrolet BrightDrop Electric Van – Ingersoll, ON
Chrysler Pacifica (gas & PHEV) – Windsor, ON
Chrysler Voyager (gas & PHEV) – Windsor, ON
Dodge Charger Daytona EV – Windsor, ON
Ford Super Duty (2026+) – Oakville, ON
Honda Civic (sedan & hybrid) – Alliston, ON
Honda CR-V (gas & hybrid) – Alliston, ON
Jeep Compass (future production) – Brampton, ON
Lexus RX (gas & hybrid) – Cambridge, ON
Lexus NX (gas & hybrid) – Cambridge, ON
Toyota RAV4 (gas & hybrid) – Cambridge & Woodstock, ONThe Charger, Pacifica, and the Lexus models are exclusive to Canada. The other models are also built in plants in the US. Parts are harder to get a handle on. Ford has a large engine plant across the river. When the tariff war started, over a year ago, I read that Ford was running Essex Engine full blast, and renting warehouse space all over metro Detroit, to house the pre-tariff inventory.
More broadly, I would not expect a new "USMCA" anytime soon.
