Orwell was remarkably perceptive about political loyalty overriding consistency, especially the idea of doublethink: the ability to hold—or accept—two contradictory propositions without feeling compelled to resolve the contradiction. The point isn't merely that people are lied to; it's that a sufficiently powerful political system can make the ability to accept contradiction part of political loyalty.

And Orwell understood something particularly unsettling: propaganda doesn't necessarily require people to believe a coherent alternative reality. Sometimes it's enough to make them accept whatever the political authority says now.
