The week's question
In December 2024, in the thread "Re: BRK: Why Not XOM?", BreckHutHigh asked the members: "What about the long road trips with kids?" This week it is put to everyone again. The button below opens the small thread re-asking it - read what others have said so far, then give your own answer as an ordinary reply.

I tend to doubt it. As Hitchens once said, it's the only piece of land with no oil. They don't have a thriving industrial base. Not much agriculture. What could they sell to raise money for the weapons they need? (serious question...I'm unaware of anything)

Which should make them a little more contrite when dealing with people on whom they depend.

As pointed out upthread, Israel's got a very strong economy. 25th biggest in the world, according to Wikipedia - with per capita GDP of more than $60K, putting it ahead of Germany or France or Spain.

That's also a very large change from 20-30 years ago, when Israel had a much less productive economy, relative to other developed countries. No doubt it also contributes to both their reluctance to accede to US demands for changes in their policies and growing skepticism that continued US support is either necessary or advisable. They have more resources to fund their own defense than they did back in the day, which is probably a big part of why they show little contrition when we ask them to do things they don't feel are in their best interests.
