In a war game, 20 years ago, General VanRiper showed it is easy to overwhelm the defenses of a carrier group with a swarm attack of cruise missiles and drones. A 30,000 ton platform could combine better survivability than a DDG, with a multiple of it's defensive capability, which would raise the bar for how large a swarm attack would need to be, to sink the carrier.

But, as you said, who would pay for the thing, while the "JCs" are given additional tax cuts?
