The week's question
In December 2024, in the thread "Re: BRK: Why Not XOM?", BreckHutHigh asked the members: "What about the long road trips with kids?" This week it is put to everyone again. The button below opens the small thread re-asking it - read what others have said so far, then give your own answer as an ordinary reply.

autos represent a mini-cosm of global macro, and its too bad that so much interesting stuff is drowned out by the cult of tesla\musk.

cars (and steel) are on the frontline of whether US&friends (mostly japan+germany+SK+turkey+brazil, maybe india) can present a united front against a wave of subsidized exports coming from china needed to rescue their economy and keep their sunk cost factories alive.

the good news :
if you are a lower GDP tier nation with no auto mfg and supply chain to protect, there is a chance to get a decent EV (and lots of other china exports) at a price far below producer cost. these are typically low\no margin nations where majors dont lose out on much.
like inflation migrates among sectors for free-trade commodities, deflation will now migrate to select locales.

new-normal.com - Car wars begin as US EU and turkey impose duties on chinese electric vehicles

my impression is that despite pain for all, china can least afford a spiral of retaliation. but the CCCP measures the suffering.
