Dope, I had this conversation a few different times while I was in the Philippines with people on messenger. Someone would ask me if they could realistically live on $800 a month in the Philippines, because that was their social security. I would tell them they could get a bedsitter for $40 a month, which was a room big enough for a bed and one outlet. That it would cost them ~$25 to get that $800 in the PI, and that food was not cheap, so a lot of beans and rice. I had met people living on $600 a month and they looked a little haggard and dirty. There's no medicare, so the big plan was to fly back to the USA if something serious went wrong with their health. There are more people than we realize in that position.
