The week's question
In December 2024, in the thread "Re: BRK: Why Not XOM?", BreckHutHigh asked the members: "What about the long road trips with kids?" This week it is put to everyone again. The button below opens the small thread re-asking it - read what others have said so far, then give your own answer as an ordinary reply.

Hezbollah has been using fiber optic drones so Israel is unable to jam them with radio waves.

Fiber optic drones? WTF? Ok, they really ARE connected to the operator with a fiber optic cable, yet somehow still have decent range. Incredibly thin fiber they must use! But I assume they don't do well in areas with a lot of obstacles that can snag the fiber...

A fiber optic drone is an unmanned aerial vehicle (UAV), usually a first-person view (FPV) loitering munition, which uses an optical fiber as its primary guidance and teleoperation link. These drones usually have fiber optic cables between 5 and 20 km (3.1 and 12.4 mi) long, although prototypes with up to 50 km (31 mi) range have been developed.[1] Fiber optic drones are impossible for defence forces to jam and very difficult to detect, as they are small and constructed from lightweight materials and have no thermal or radio signature.[2][3] They are relatively inexpensive to produce.[4][5]
...
An operator controls the drone via fiber optic cable connection. Ultra-thin fiber optic wire provides connection between the drone and the operator and spools of fiber optic wire unwind as the drone flies to its target.[4][6] Advantages of these drones include immunity to jamming as compared to traditional radio drones,[7] higher data rates from the drone, even from locations where radio contact is poor, with the signal not revealing operator's or drone's location by radio direction finding,[8][9] and less power required to communicate, so they can be used to idle on the ground for ambushes.[10]
