The week's question
In December 2024, in the thread "Re: BRK: Why Not XOM?", BreckHutHigh asked the members: "What about the long road trips with kids?" This week it is put to everyone again. The button below opens the small thread re-asking it - read what others have said so far, then give your own answer as an ordinary reply.

.....Why should there be ten major AI companies? This business has all the makings of a monopoly. Ultimately, the best algorithm wins out—just as Google prevailed in search. The prize for the winner may be gigantic—fair enough. But the others will see their value approach zero. Consequently, the overall cost is too high, because every company is valued as if it were the monopolist that survives......

Is this the way it works? Is this how it worked with the Internet? Did the internet make one company money because why would anyone do business with the 2nd or 3rd or 10th best internet company?

I hope its obvious that the answer is no, the internet made 100s? 1000s? of companies gigantic and rich.

To make the point, consider Facebook, Apple, Amazon, Netflix, and Google. About which one might say: "every company is valued as if it were the monopolist that survives......"
