The week's question
In December 2024, in the thread "Re: BRK: Why Not XOM?", BreckHutHigh asked the members: "What about the long road trips with kids?" This week it is put to everyone again. The button below opens the small thread re-asking it - read what others have said so far, then give your own answer as an ordinary reply.

" So, Which is the Best Stock to Buy?
Think of it this way. The fact that Buffett bought both represents two sides of Buffett. Chevron is pretty simply an excellent dividend stock with terrific total shareholder return. It has a pristine balance sheet and currently sells at a decent price. If you are a dividend investor, it's probably the place for you. I'm not much of a dividend investor—when I hear the word dividend, paying more taxes pops immediately into my mind—but I will admit I have been tempted by Chevron.

Bear in mind, though, that Buffett owns about three times as much Occidental and has continued to buy persistently without selling since that first hiccup of 2020. It's a stock for numbers nerds, which Buffett clearly is, and so am I. It's more of a long-term capital gains opportunity with, yes, a bit more risk, but a risk that is well justified. You must start by understanding that it is not an integrated oil major but a very high-powered exploration and production company with tremendous Profitability. Seeking Alpha might give a thought to reclassifying its industry to reflect its actual business is in so that it does not continue with the stigma of being 17th of the 17 companies in its industry. It is nothing of the sort, and brings some extras to the exploration and production area. Now that Vicki Hollub has fully learned the trick of buying, borrowing, paying down debt, and then owning the assets for next to nothing, OXY may well be in a good place to keep buying Permian and other assets from owners pressed to get out. I own a modest amount of OXY in family accounts, and it's a likely add as some of my fixed income assets roll off."
