The preliminary report also describes another issue:
"The right engine starter generator ... was missing multiple screws from the outer housing...[u}pon removal of the starter generator, the starter generator shaft was found bent, the cooling fan was fractured, and multiple cooling fan blades and ball bearings were found when the
generator was removed. The cooling fan shroud also contained circumferential scoring marks..."
The narrative describes issues early in the flight with “a low frequency vibration and a humming noise… it sounds like a fan is on… you
can feel it in the dashboard…it was on steady during the climb, but it is gone now.” which cycled on and off during the flight.
What's not clear to me is how the two failures (the fuel pump weld breaking and the starter generator doing a slow-motion self-destruct) relate to each other. Are they in physical proximity such that the generator vibration was strong enough to fracture the weld? The accompanying photo of the fuel switch shows a complete break with the pipe at the weld
Certainly it seems clear that fuel starvation caused the crash, and the broken-off fuel pressure switch caused the fuel starvation. But it also seems clear that the generator issue came before.
Anyone here familiar enough under the hood with these aircraft to comment?
