Most of us have been anesthetized. No suffering. And if you don't wake up from the anesthesia you will have died painlessly. If the object is to kill the condemned without 'cruel and unusual' punishment, it should be easy to do.
Anesthesia is hard to administer properly. When you've been anesthetized, it was by a trained anesthesiologist. But they won't do executions - against their code of medical ethics, and all. Executions have to be carried out by prison staff, not medical staff. And pharmaceutical companies refuse to sell prisons many of the drugs that are used in anesthesia.
Executions do involve a sedative, but it's not the most effective stuff, and it's administered by non-medical corrections staff.
